Some stuff that applies right now

“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a little bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

“I have to live with myself, and so,
I want to be fit for myself to know;
I want to be able as days go by,
Always to look myself straight in the eye;
I don't want to stand with the setting sun
And hate myself for the things I've done.
I don't want to keep on a closet shelf
A lot of secrets about myself,
And fool myself as I come and go
Into thinking that nobody else will know
The kind of man I really am;
I don't want to dress myself up in sham.
I want to go out with my head erect,
I want to deserve all men's respect;
But here in this struggle for fame and pelf,
I want to be able to like myself.
I don't want to think as I come and go
That I'm for bluster and bluff and empty show.
I never can hide myself from me,
I see what others may never see,
I know what others may never know,
I never can fool myself -- and so,
Whatever happens, I want to be
Self-respecting and conscience free.”
~Edgar A. Guest, Myself

“It’s like running down this ridiculously long tunnel, because there’s a light at the end, and, again, it’s not a light, it’s a mirror, and you’re on fire.” ~Kablammy, LiveJournal user

“We get so much in the habit of wearing a disguise before others that we eventually appear disguised before ourselves.” ~Jim Bishop

“to be nobody-but-myself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make me everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight and never stop fighting.” ~e. e. cummings

“I’d rather be disliked for who I am than liked for who I’m not.” ~LiveJournal user

“If nature has made you a giver, your hands are born open, and so is your heart. And though there may be times when your hands are empty, your heart is always full, and you can give things out of that.” ~Francis Hodgson Burnett, A Little Princess

“Being right too soon is socially unacceptable.” ~Robert A. Heinlein

“Integrity is not a conditional word. It doesn't blow in the wind or change with the weather. It is your inner image of yourself, and if you look in there and see a man who won't cheat, then you know he never will.” ~John D. MacDonald, The Turquoise Lament

And lastly,
“When I'm "good" I'm high-and-mighty and holier-than-thou. When I'm "bad" you'd rather I be good. Either way I lose, so maybe I'll just try to find me and stick with that.” ~Me

(no subject)

So my physics test went kaplooey today. I did okay and bad. So we'll see how it all works out. At least on this test there were actually things that I was certain I knew, as opposed to the last one (oh, and if anyone is curious I finally got that grade back...19 out of 50). Hopefully this one is better. Once I finish the Ralph test tonight I'm completely totally one hundred percent done with physics for the rest of my life...unless they ask me to teach it cause there is no physics teacher. Blah and phoey. I hope not.

And in other news, I am actually online at the moment, but of course nobody else is talking to me or anything. I get yelled at for not being on, but whenever I am noone is there. I'm tired of being in lose-lose situations.

On Quitting
~Edgar A. Guest

How much grit do you think you've got?
Can you quit a thing that you like a lot?
You may talk of pluck; it's an easy word,
And where'er you go it is often heard;
But can you tell to a jot or guess
Just how much courage you now possess?

You may stand to trouble and keep your grin,
But have you tackled self-discipline?
Have you ever issued commands to you
To quit the things that you like to do,
And then, when tempted and sorely swayed,
Those rigid orders have you obeyed?

Don't boast of your grit till you've tried it out,
Nor prate to men of your courage stout,
For it's easy enough to retain a grin
In the face of a fight there's a chance to win,
But the sort of grit that is good to own
Is the stuff you need when you're all alone.

How much grit do you think you've got?
Can you turn from joys that you like a lot?
Have you ever tested yourself to know
How far with yourself your will can go?
If you want to know if you have grit,
Just pick out a joy that you like, and quit.

It's bully sport and it's open fight;
It will keep you busy both day and night;
For the toughest kind of a game you'll find
Is to make your body obey your mind.
And you never will know what is meant by grit
Unless there's something you've tried to quit.
